Joan & Charles
The Story So Far
Isn't it funny how two people can grow up just five minutes down the road from one another and never meet? They know several of the same people, attend musicals the other is in, even almost go to the same prom - yet their paths never truly cross.
Charles and Joan grew up in Burlington, North Carolina, where they both moved back with their families after college. Joan joined the Bible study young adult Small Group that Charles already attended. When they introduced themselves and Charles said, "Joan, like Joan of Arc!" - she knew. Well, maybe not quite yet. But they did continue to grow closer while going to that Small Group, bonding over things like both having grown up in Scouts, silly D&D podcasts, and a mutual love of puns. Charles asked Joan out, one thing led to another, and now they're purr-oud cat parents who are so excited to have you celebrate this next step with them!
The Venue
Castle McCulloch began its life as a gold refinery built and run by Cornish engineer Charles McCulloch. The structure was completed in 1832 and operated until at least 1848, processing gold ore from local mines in Jamestown and Greensboro. The main building was the "rock engine house," a Cornish-style ore mill housing a several-tons steam engine that powered huge millstones to either side of the structure.
Over the decades, the property changed hands several times and fell into disrepair until it was bought and reconstructed by Richard Harris in the 1980s. Harris maintained as much of the original design as possible, while expanding the space with a wooden addition and transforming it into the beautiful event space you see today.
Today, Castle McCulloch is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and boasts features reminiscent of European manors. The leaded glass windows, wrought-iron chandeliers, beautiful wood floors, and cathedral ceiling evoke a sense of timeless elegance, while the lush grounds envelop you in the beauty of nature.
We fell in love with the castle immediately upon visiting! It reminded us of the Renaissance Festival, which we enjoy attending together every year. We love the history of the place and the fun, personal touches, such as the suit of armor (named Fred!). We hope you'll enjoy celebrating here with us!

Frequently Asked
Questions
What’s the dress code?
Creative semi-formal! The wedding party
will be wearing medium-colored suits and long dresses. We'd love for you to have fun with
your attire, whether that means a formal gown,
a cocktail number, a nice shirt and slacks, or even Renaissance fest garb. Wear what makes you feel your most “you” - we just ask that it be fancier than sweatpants and that no one wear white, lest they get mistaken for a bride. Having you here to celebrate with us is the most important part!
Is the wedding indoors or outdoors?
The ceremony will be outdoors on the patio with a tent for shade. The reception will be inside in the castle’s Great Hall. Should the weather forecast predict rain, the ceremony may be moved to the Great Hall as well.
Can i take pictures at the ceremony?
We are having an “unplugged ceremony,” which means that we ask that you refrain from using cameras or cell phones during the ceremony - our photographer’s got it covered! We would love for you to take all the photos you wish during the reception, however, including for our photo guestbook!
Joan’s engagement ring was officially Melody-approved!
What time should i arrive?
The ceremony begins at 6:00, so we ask that guests begin arriving at 5:00 and be seated no later than 5:45.
Are children invited?
We love your littles! If your child or children are named on your invitation, they are invited. However, you know your child best and whether they will be able to handle sitting through a ceremony and staying through a reception. We will leave it to your discretion whether the whole family attends or you make it a fun night out for the adults.
Where do I park?
There is free parking on-site in a lot next to the castle. There will be signs directing vehicles and ushers directing guests to the ceremony space. For guests with mobility needs, there is a drop-off loop connected to the parking lot that will be indicated.
How do I RSVP?
An RSVP card with a pre-stamped envelope was included with your invitation - please fill that out and mail it in. Alternatively, there is an RSVP link further down on this webpage! Just click on the RSVP button, type in the case-sensitive password provided, and fill out the form with your information.
Please make sure to send in your RSVP even if you cannot attend!
What if I miss the RSVP deadline?
If we do not hear one way or the other from you by the RSVP deadline of MAY 25, we will assume you are unfortunately unable to make it. As we have set that date to allow us to get final numbers to our vendors, if you RSVP "yes" past that point, you'll need to bring a sandwich and a lawn chair!
What if my RSVP changes?
If your RSVP changes after you have submitted it but before the RSVP deadline, please let us know by emailing any updated information to joancharleswedding@gmail.com.
